The winner for Best Manga award in the 2021 Harvey Awards has been announced, and it’s Chainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto! The other titles in the running were Asadora! by Naoki Urasawa, Remina by Junji Ito, SPY x FAMILY by Tatsuya Endo, and Boys Run the Riot by Keito Gaku.

Winner Fujimoto gave this response:

“Thank you for the insanely awesome award! It’s the best award of any awards that exist in America! I consider this crude manga of mine unbefitting of any award, but I plan to continue packing it full of all the things that I love.

If you ever happen to be handing out awards again, hit me up! Thank you very much!”

VIZ Media publishes Chainsaw Man, and it gave this description of the first volume:

“Denji’s a poor young man who’ll do anything for money, even hunting down devils with his pet devil-dog Pochita. He’s a simple man with simple dreams, drowning under a mountain of debt. But his sad life gets turned upside down one day when he’s betrayed by someone he trusts. Now with the power of a devil inside him, Denji’s become a whole new man—Chainsaw Man!”

Manga was additionally honored when Rumiko Takahashi was inducted into the Harvey Awards’ Hall of Fame. 2021’s other inductees are Bernie Wrightson, Michael Kaluta, Jeffrey Catherine Jones, and Barry Windsor-Smith. Takahashi had this to say:

“Thank you so much for this wonderful award. I am so honored the American readers have enjoyed my work. Through the medium of manga, I am so happy I am able to communicate with all of you. The world is in hardship due to COVID, but I hope my manga can provide some support.”

The Harvey Awards describes itself as “one of the comic industry’s oldest and most prestigious awards. Recognizing outstanding achievement in multiple categories, the Harvey’s have been a fixture of the comic industry since 1988.”
