Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is known for his flashy style of play, but that appears to be catching up with him.
Mahomes accounted for three of the Chiefs’ four turnovers in Sunday’s 38-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium, and he’s been uncharacteristically careless with the ball throughout the 2021 campaign. With Kansas City falling to 2-3 on the season, Mahomes said that he has to adjust his style of play.
“It starts with me,” Mahomes told reporters. “It’s something I’ve not usually done in my career, but I have to reevaluate where I’m at, what decisions I’m making.”
Through five games, Mahomes has thrown six interceptions, which is tied for the third-highest total in the NFL only behind rookie quarterbacks Zach Wilson and Trevor Lawrence. Comparatively, Mahomes threw six interceptions in the entire 2020 season and five interceptions in 2019.
“I’ve been a crazier player as far as scrambling and making throws,” Mahomes continued. “But in my career I’ve never been someone who throws a lot of interceptions. I have to look at it now, reevaluate what I’m doing, and I have to cut it out.”
Sunday’s game between the Chiefs and the Bills was initially viewed as a potential preview of an AFC playoff matchup. But Kansas City has not been playing up to expectations, and much of that falls on Mahomes.
After an hourlong delay due to weather to start the second half, Mahomes committed two costly turnovers, including a pick-six to safety Micah Hyde. He threw a red-zone interception to defensive end Greg Rousseau on the very next possession.
Mahomes is on pace to throw 20 picks this season. His career high is 12 in 2018, but that was the same year he threw 50 touchdowns. The 2018 league MVP knows he will have to clean up his style if he hopes to lead the Chiefs to a third consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
“We know we have what it takes to be great,” Mahomes said. “It’s a matter of coming together now and finding a way to do that.”
Kansas City will face the Washington Football Team in a road matchup next Sunday.
