Cyberpunk 2077

I have seen some Cyberpunk 2077 sales from time to time, but we are deep into discount territory for new copies of the game right now.

Wario64, deal-hunter extraordinaire, pointed me toward this listing at Target where physical copies of Cyberpunk 2077 for PS4 and Xbox One are now just $10 until this Tuesday.

This is far and away the lowest price I’ve seen for the game yet. When it returned to the PlayStation store, it was discounted permanently to $50, then went on sale further to $33 for a bit. But for a new, non-used copy, $10 for both consoles is easily the lowest I’ve seen. And yes, as I’ve said before, I can recommend it at that price. And yet there’s sort of a catch here.

CDPR has promised that next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 will be free, so if you spend $10 on this box copy of the game for PS4 or Xbox One, that means they will have to give you a free upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X version when that is released. Here’s what CDPR originally said all the way back in June 2020:

“Earlier in the year we announced that if you pick up Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One you’ll be able to play it on Xbox Series X when the console launches,” the stream states. “If you pick up Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4, you’ll also be able to play it on PS5 when the console launches. And that’s not all. There will be a free upgrade for Xbox Series X and PS5, but we’ll have more details on that soon.”

“More details on that soon” and we are now a year and a half later where the only details are that CDPR is targeting the next-gen upgrade for 2021, but many indications are that it will slip to 2022. But it doesn’t matter, as they’re going to have to keep their word on the free upgrades whenever it comes, unless they want to dive into another fan firestorm.

My advice? If you own a PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, or Xbox One X, pick up the game for $10 and just play it now. You aren’t going to find a lower price and at this point, there are only so many fixes and upgrades CDPR can make for the last-gen versions of the game. It probably won’t get all that much better than it is now (and it’s not great, especially on base PS4s and Xbox One).

But if you own a PS5 or Xbox Series X or are planning to get one soon, buy this copy and then…don’t play it. Like load it up and make sure it’s installed on your system in case CDPR tries to pull a “you must have the game on your system starting on this date” trick or something, but then just wait for the free next-gen upgrade, and have that be your first experience with the game, as it will no doubt be much, much better.

So yeah, $10. Despite all the problems, this is a no-brainer pick-up, if you ask me.
