Auston Matthews appeared to have earned a Maple Leafs power play against the Lightning in Game 6. Did the refs screw Toronto out of the win?

The Toronto Maple Leafs looked as if they were destined to move onto round two in the Stanley Cup playoff but things went south about halfway through the third period.

During a 5-on-3 power play, the Lightning tied the game up with 10 minutes left in regulation.

They proceeded to score the winning goal in overtime. However, that game-winner came on the heels of a questionable call — or, rather, a lack thereof.

Did refs miss a penalty in overtime that cost the Maple Leafs?

The Lightning scored the game-winning goal with just under two minutes left. Should they have been on the penalty kill instead?

The Maple Leafs were victims of a questionable no-call on Auston Matthews prior to the OT winner. Alex Killorn appeared to tug on Mathews’ jersey yet the refs looked the other way.

This might be worse than the phantom high stick and the missed too many men call. This is some clutch and grab era stuff. pic.twitter.com/pndV79OOhG

John Tavares: “I don’t have any comments about the refs tonight.”

Killorn was a highly penalized player throughout the season and the refs should have paid close attention to him during such a pivotal playoff matchup. He had the most penalty minutes of his entire career this season. In 2021-2022, the forward spent 66 minutes in the penalty box and the Lightning as a team finished with the second-most penalties in the league.

Auston Matthews’ unique postgame quote after game 6 loss is going viral

Auston Mathews and his team were disappointed by the no-call but have kept a forward mindset. The Leafs superstar opted to focus on game seven rather than dwell on the loss in OT. Here’s what he had to say.

Auston Matthews: “What’s in the past is in the past man. We can’t change that now. It’s about this next game and going out there with a purpose, and with details, and just competing for 60 minutes or whatever it takes. We just gotta put our balls on the line and go for it.”
