Khamzat Chimaev slept Li Jingliang in the first round at UFC 267 in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 30. He secured the rear-naked choke to earn the technical submission at 3:16.

Chimaev went for the takedown and heldJingliang in the air, walked him over to where Dana White was sitting and then slammed him to the canvas in the first seconds of the fight, setting a tone early. From there he heldJingliang to the canvas looking for moments of ground and pound. After peppering him with hard shots, Chimaev tookJingliang’s back and flattened him out. In that position, he was able to find the choke to secure the rear-naked choke and putJingliang to sleep.

Chimaev was returning to the cage for the first time since September 2020. The undefeated fighter had briefly retired due to a serious bout of COVID-19 but later recanted that retirement and promised to fight again. Prior to that, he was considered one of the UFC’s fastest rising stars winning his first three UFC appearances in stunning fashion. All three of his bouts happened within a 2-month span and included a 17 second KO of Gerald Meerschaert.

Jingliang is the No. 11 ranked welterweight and was riding the wave from his Performance of the Night first-round KO of Santiago Ponzinibbio. He was looking to derail the hype train ofChimaev during the main card of UFC 267.
