A man fell off of a 50-foot cliff by the Sutro Bath ruins and is currently in serious condition, the San Francisco Fire Department said Wednesday.

The incident took place at 914 Point Lobos Ave. around 7 p.m. No further information has been released about his age, where he was headed or whether drugs or alcohol were involved. This isn’t the first mishap near the famous historic site, though: In May, four people were injured after their car plunged off a cliff on the 800 block of Point Lobos Avenue.

A surreal landmark in San Francisco, Adolph Sutro opened the baths in 1896 to provide an ornate, expansive swimming facility for thousands of Bay Area residents. According to the National Park Service, it once held seven swimming pools along with slides,  trapezes and springboards, even showcasing rare artifacts from Mexico, China and the Middle East. A staggering 10,000 people could visit the baths at a time, but the facility fell out of favor by the 1930s.

In 1966 — just two years after developers bought the area and started to demolish it to make way for high-rise apartments — a devastating fire swept through the remains, preventing further construction. Today, it’s still a morbid source of intrigue for visitors and residents alike.

The U.S. Park Police’s San Francisco field office and the San Francisco Fire Department did not respond to SFGATE’s request for comment.
