The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has hired Spencer Carbery as an assistant coach.

“Spencer possesses a great mind for the game along with the necessary work ethic, energy and communication skills we were looking for,” said Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe. “I’m thrilled to have him join Manny, Dean and myself on the bench this season.”

“My family and I are thrilled to be joining the Maple Leafs organization,” said Carbery. “I can’t wait to get started in doing everything I can to help this historic franchise.”

Carbery joins the Maple Leafs after three seasons with the Hershey Bears, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Washington Capitals. Last season, Carbery was honoured with the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award as the AHL’s outstanding coach after leading the Bears to a 24-7-2-0 record. During his three-year tenure, the Bears posted a record of 104-50-9-8 (.658 points percentage).

Prior to joining Hershey, Carbery served as an assistant coach with the AHL’s Providence Bruins following one season as the head coach of the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit in 2016-17. From 2011-12 to 2015-16, he was the head coach and director of hockey operations for Hershey’s ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, earning the John Brophy Award as the ECHL’s Coach of the Year in 2014. Carbery also took part in the Maple Leafs 2017 Development Camp as a guest coach.

As a player, the Victoria, British Columbia native played professionally with South Carolina, Fresno, Stockton and Bakersfield of the ECHL and Tulsa of the Central Hockey League.
