NFL Draft’s ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Grant Stuard feels ‘appreciated’ by Buccaneers

May 3 (UPI) — Grant Stuard was skipped over by 32 teams 258 times in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected the former Houston linebacker with the final pick, but the latest “Mr. Irrelevant” still feels “appreciated.”

Stuard embraced the nickname, given to the final pick of each year’s draft, by using it in hashtags Sunday on Twitter. He joined the Buccaneers at the end of the seventh round Saturday.

“I watched every pick,” Stuard told reporters Saturday during a Zoom video conference. “I had so many friends I felt like would go early. Toward the end of the draft, I was working on free agency deals, saying I guess I’ll go there. There were a lot of people in my ear.

“I was just finishing the draft hoping one of my friends would go. Hearing Tampa call me was just crazy. That is the best team. I was like I’m ready to go. … It shows me what the organization values. I feel like I’ll be appreciated there.”

Stuard totaled 61 tackles, five tackles for a loss, a sack, a fumble recovery and a touchdown in seven games last season for the Cougars. The Senior Bowl participant earned All-American Athletic Conference first-team honors in 2020.

Buccaneers kicker Ryan Succop was the last pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Succop became the first “Mr. Irrelevant” to win a Super Bowl when the Buccaneers beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 7 in Tampa, Fla.

Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht compared Stuard to former New England Patriots special teams star Larry Izzo, but said the rookie linebacker has a chance to make an impact outside of special teams.

“Not to say that we don’t think Grant has a chance to play linebacker — he’s going to be [an inside linebacker] for us on the field — but we think he’s got a chance to excel as a special-teams ace,” Licht told reporters Saturday.

The Buccaneers selected two linebackers, an edge rusher, an offensive lineman, a quarterback, a wide receiver and a cornerback in the 2021 NFL Draft. They started the draft with the selection of former Washington edge rusher Joe Tyron at No. 32 overall. They added former Florida quarterback Kyle Trask in the second round.
