The Rays acquired right-hander Matt Wisler from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Minor League left-hander Michael Plassmeyer on Friday.

Wisler compiled a 6.05 ERA with 26 strikeouts and only six walks in 19 1/3 innings before the Giants designated him for assignment on Wednesday. Wisler, 28, will look to regain his form from 2020, when he was a standout in the Twins’ bullpen, recording a 1.07 ERA across 25 1/3 innings.

“It was really tough, because there were some underlying things that he’s done really well,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said on Wednesday. “I still think he’s a good pitcher. He’s striking guys out. He wasn’t walking a ton of guys. There was just some contact at more unfortunate times that turned into big innings, and it was just kind of tough for him to get out from underneath.”

Plassmeyer, 24, posted a 3.64 ERA this season at Double-A Richmond. He has 33 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings through seven appearances, including three starts.

The Rays, who also acquired cash considerations in the deal, designated catcher Deivy Grullón for assignment to make room for Wisler, who is expected to join the Rays in time for Saturday’s game versus the Orioles.
