Roblox, the massively popular game-creating video game, has been down for a day and a half now. It’s far and away the longest outage the game has ever seen, and with Roblox now being a publicly traded entity, that has the potential to do more than just upset players trying to log in.
The outage is widespread and mysterious. It’s not just that the game is down, even Roblox.com and all its information and support pages are offline. We’ve received a scarce amount of info about what’s going on, but a new update from the company makes it clear that this is not Chipotle’s fault.
Originally, when this outage first began, players were blaming it on the fact that too many people were flooding the game to try to take advantage of a digital Chipotle which had opened inside Roblox and was giving out free burritos in real life. Every day, the first 30,000 players who got to the in-game Chipotle would get a free burrito voucher, and there were other offers like discount codes and Chipotle-themed Roblox gear.
The idea is that this offer was so popular, and so many people were trying to get to the digital Chipotle it broke the game, but Roblox is now saying this is not the case, and that the current outage is “not related to any specific experiences or partnerships on the platform.”
Despite being offline for almost 6 hours, this so far has had no affect on Roblox stock, as perhaps it’s investors just aren’t paying attention, or assume the problem will be resolved shortly. Players, meanwhile, are melting down over the outage because the game has never seen anything like it before. To date, Roblox stock is up 20% since its IPO.
As for what’s going on, that’s anyone’s guess, as even the game’s status pages are down and can no longer be updated, so all we get are tweets like the one above. Obviously the game will come back online eventually, but it’s rare to see a game this big be down for this long, and they’re going to have to address what actually happened here, if it wasn’t a Chipotle-inspired burrito rush.
Check back here for more updates, as presumably Roblox will say something this morning about the status of things. Until then, I guess it’s just time to play a different game for a while.
