Scooters Recalled Due to Barium Exposure Risks from Surface Coatings

EMSL Analytical offers barium and other metal testing services to identify consumer products that do not meet regulatory requirements and could pose an exposure hazard.

Toronto, Ontario – WEBWIRE

Last month, Health Canada announced the recall of thousands of imported 3-wheel scooters designed for young children that were sold throughout Canada from September of 2019 through August of this year. The recall occurred after the surface coating and applied surface coating components of the scooters were found to contain a barium compound in excess of the allowable limit under the Canadian Toys Regulations.

In Canada, children’s toys and related products that have a surface coating material applied to them cannot have a compound of antimony, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, or barium if more than 0.1% of the compound dissolves in 5% hydrochloric acid after being stirred for 10 minutes at 20°C.

Last year, the same agency announced the recall of over 26,000 imported retractable safety gates and hundreds of playsets because surface coatings were found to contain barium more than allowable limits.

“Barium is not just an exposure risk in children’s products,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “In both Canada and the United States, there are also occupational exposure limits for barium to protect workers that could come in contact with it. Typical occupational exposure routes include inhalation, ingestion, skin, and eye contact. EMSL offers consumer product, industrial hygiene, and environmental testing services from their network of laboratories throughout Canada and the United States to help mitigate exposure risks to barium and other regulated metals.”
