Texans owner Cal McNair used a racist slur at a charity golf tournament held by the team in May, according to a Bally Sports report.

While addressing a crowd of over 100, McNair finished his remarks by saying, “I’m sorry we couldn’t get together last year, because of the China Virus,” per reporter Michael Silver, reportedly stunning the crowd as his wife, Hannah, smirked.

“Everyone gasped,” a witness told Silver. “Especially the people directly across from him. He and Hannah seemed to think it was hilarious. It was dead silent.”

It’s not the first time the McNair family has been caught up in a racism scandal. McNair’s father, Bob, who died in 2018, was forced to apologize in 2017 after telling owners they “can’t have the inmates running the prison” in relation to player protests about police brutality.

The fallout from that remark included DeAndre Hopkins and Duane Brown skipping practice the next day (both were eventually traded, Brown within days), and then-coach Bill O’Brien reportedly needing to convince players to board a flight to Seattle for that week’s game.

Bob McNair later retracted his apology, claiming he had been referring to NFL officials with the word “inmates.”

According to Silver’s report, Hannah McNair joked about Cal’s racist remark at the event, just a week after making a public visit to a local Asian community center.

McNair apologized in a statement to Bally Sports, calling the comments, “an inappropriate choice of words.”

“I immediately apologized to people who approached me then and I apologize again now,” McNair said. “I know how important it is to choose my words carefully. I would never want to offend anyone.”
