After the Pittsburgh Steelers declined the fifth-year option for running back Najee Harris, a rumor began floating around that named him as a trade target for the Dallas Cowboys.

However, NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported on Monday that any links between Harris and the Cowboys were dismissed as “click bait” by a team source.

Harris has played in all 17 games and eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in each of his first three seasons in the NFL, so it was somewhat surprising that Pittsburgh decided not to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal. The option would’ve paid Harris $6.8 million in the 2025 season, but he is now entering the final year of his contract and will become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

However, ESPN’s Brooke Pryor noted, “The Steelers are not ruling out agreeing to a deal with Harris after this season.” The organization reportedly wants to evaluate how Harris and the other running backs adjust to the new offensive system installed by new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith before making any decisions on long-term commitments.

The Cowboys lost starting running back Tony Pollard to free agency when he signed with the Tennessee Titans, so they decided to reunite with a familiar face by signing veteran Ezekiel Elliott to a deal for the 2024 season. The team’s backups Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn leave much to be desired, so it would make sense for Dallas to seek an upgrade.

Unfortunately, it sounds like Harris won’t be available for the Cowboys anytime soon. The 26-year-old should be motivated to put forth a big year after having his fifth-year option declined, so Pittsburgh will not let him go easily.
